The New Sampling Rules: How to Avoid Endless Revisions

Sampling is where many apparel projects start to drift. A first sample comes in, the founder reacts emotionally, changes pile up, and the factory is left guessing which details matter most.

The fix is not to avoid revisions. The fix is to make every revision specific.

Set the sample goal before it arrives

Is this sample for silhouette, fit, fabric, construction, print placement, or final approval? If the purpose is unclear, the feedback will be unclear too.

Separate must-fix from nice-to-have

Every comment should fall into one of three categories:

• Must fix before next sample

• Acceptable for first production

• Future improvement

Send feedback in one organized document

Factories work best from consolidated notes, marked photos, measurements, and clear instructions. Avoid sending scattered comments across text messages, calls, and emails.

Sampling should move the product closer to production with every round.
